on account of the increase in the number of Health districts from eight to ten two additional Inspectors be obtained from England.

The Government would not give the increased pay required to obtain two good men from England so two were obtained locally after considerable delay.

On the 2nd June, 1898 at a meeting of the Sanitary Board a letter from the Medical Officer of Health recommending an increase in the staff of Sanitary Inspectors was read and discussed. In connexion with this the President minuted:–

If we are to safeguard this Colony from outbreaks of epidemic diseases I am of opinion that it is essential to increase the staff of Inspectors as recommended by the Medical Officer of Health.

It is quite impossible to ensure this with our present staff and it is in non-epidemic times that we must endeavour to put our house in order, so that should disease unfortunately gain access to the Colony it shall not find a nidus in which to grow and spread.

This scheme was forwarded to the Colonial Secretary for the favourable consideration of the Government and the result was the increase of the staff.
